Basically, smaller media grain size and more media quantity is better in maintaining good product water quality as we discussed before. But this decision should be taken wisely because smaller size and more media quantity also have negative effect as we mentioned like increasing pressure differential and pressure drop between filter inlet and outlet flow line because of filter media pores clogging that will lead to more frequent backwash which is not economical option.
Limitations
Too much smaller grain size leads to pressure loses and less unit filter run volume(UFRV) which is the water that filter can produce before it need to be back washed so water consumed for backwash is more
Too much filter grain quantity is more costly regarding media and vessel, higher or wider media layer will make filter bigger and costs more
So we will learn now how to balance between media quantity and grain size by using the depth to size ration in the next slide
